Our club has just had its second gasshuku in Bournemouth, Dorset at Durley Hall Hotel. This is the club getting together and holding training sessions over a weekend - We train Friday evening, have a longer lesson on Saturday and on Sunday we train on the beach which is really lovely.
Its an excellent opportunity for the black belt instructors to teach karate moves that we do not always have lime for within the lesson. For example this year Sensei Pell demonstrated Nijushiho, one of the more senior katas and Sensei Edwards showed us Bassai Dai. Whilst giving the more senior belts a chance to practise, it also gives the lower belts a glimpse of what they would be learning in the future.
Our Saturday training lasts about 4 hours which isn't as daunting as it may seem. Each of the black belts will take a lesson lasting about fifty minutes and we have a short break in between with a larger break halfway.
Sempei Boughey taught the first lesson and he showed us various attacks including the eagle hand, the tiger mouth and bear hand and whereabouts on the person they would be most effective. He also explained how to handle an attempted mugging. At such a time you would experience an adrenaline rush which can make you panic. You need to control and use it to your advantage.
Sensei Ayres and Sensei Dewson also taught a lesson each. Sensei Ayres showed us some blocks and counters to continue what Sempei Boughey had been showing us and also some takedowns.
Sensei Dewson had us practicing basics which are very important as they are the basis for Karate.
After training we have an opportunity to do whatever we like. It's a good opportunity to socialise with each other. This year, on our first night, the club went out for a meal at a local restaurant which we all enjoyed.
The gasshukus are great fun and enjoyed by all. We all came back a bit fitter and are already looking forward to the 2006 gasshuku!
